Laminate countertops are made from plywood or particleboard that is covered with colored treated high pressure plastic that is bonded to the base. There are two types of laminate countertops. One is called “Postform”, which comes in full slabs direct from the factory with a pre-built edge and usually an integrated backsplash. The other type of laminate countertop is called “custom”. Custom laminate tops are generally built from scratch and have a square, beveled, or wood edge. Custom tops are generally used for unusual countertop layouts or for odd-sized tops. Postform is usually used for straight-forward countertop designs and layouts.

Laminate Countertops Style Options

Laminate is available in literally hundreds of colors and a variety of patterns, textures, and finishes. If you prefer a more modern look, laminate countertops can also be crafted to simulate the look of stone and wood. Laminate countertops also offer a large variety of edge profiles. With these options, you can get the stylish appearance of natural stone countertops while having the benefit of a low-cost investment.

One very nice aspect of laminate countertops is that seams are not usually visible. Laminate surfacing techniques have made seams very discreet, even hard to find sometimes. Our expert installers can install a laminate countertop in your home with a seam you will be hard-pressed to find. You can get a look that you love for a fraction of the price! How can you beat that?

Typically, laminate countertops are now much more durable than they used to be.  Even though laminate tops are somewhat resistant to scratches and heat, deep cuts and scorching can still be damaging to laminate surfaces. It will never stand up as well as something like quartz, but it’s strong in its own right.

When you are preparing food or need to use sharp utensils, be sure to use a cutting board or other protective surface. Never set a hot pan on your laminate countertop. If it isn’t cool enough to handle, you should not set it directly on the countertop surface. Keep that in mind as a good rule of thumb. Always use a hot-pad to be safe. If your laminate countertop does need to be repaired by a professional, it will take no longer than a morning or afternoon.

Flexible Options With Laminate

The ability to easily replace your laminate countertop altogether is another advantage for people who like to change the ‘look’ of their home. Once laminate countertops are installed, changing the surface can be easy and done at a reasonable cost as opposed to solid surface, stone, or wood countertops, which are a long-term investments.

Laminate countertops are very easy to maintain, and with the proper care, your countertop should last for many years. Cleaning your laminate countertop is easy. Just use a damp cloth or sponge with mild soap. Don’t use abrasive soaps or pads to clean tough spots as this may damage the surface. Laminate countertops are also non-porous so they will resist staining and bacteria. Be cautious of deep textured countertops. Dirt and bacteria can be harder to clean out of the deeper grooves.

You should not think of laminate countertops as something that you will only find in your grandma’s house. They are newer and better looking than they ever have been. They are more durable, easy to repair, and can even be replaced when you want a new look for your kitchen. Getting a new slab of quartz every few years just to change looks will really start to cost you. If you’re changing that often, laminate countertops are an affordable and creative option for choosing a new countertop.

Laminate countertops come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. They can range from solid colors, woodgrains, to stone in appearance, but at a fraction of what you would pay for the real thing. Laminate also offers more edge choices than other materials. Postform laminate countertops also can be ordered with a seamless cove backsplash to keep spills from seeping behind the cabinets.

Laminate Countertops Upkeep

One of the most popular features of laminate countertops is the ease of care. While other homeowners see everything – butter, tomato sauce, coffee, grape juice – as a stain about to happen, you can relax with laminate. You know that you’re just going to wipe whatever it is right off.

Laminate countertops are great for families with children where spills or food can sit on laminate virtually worry-free. Combined with the affordability of laminate, laminate countertops are a smart choice. It’s actually pretty hard to go wrong with laminate countertops.

Laminate offers the best choice of colors and patterns – in addition to the best price. Yet laminate’s advantages go beyond price and selection.

Then there’s style — with laminates’ low cost and always-up-to-date patterns and colors, changing your countertop to be right in style with today’s trends is a piece of cake. Selling your house and want to make your kitchen sparkle for potential buyers? A new laminate countertop will have a much greater impact on your sale price than a coat of paint. Keep that in mind!
